Hey:
Is this your first tournament?
No
How many tournaments have you played ?
1 regionals and 5 seasonal kits. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every one of them so far despite finishing in the bottom half every time. The guys up here in Scotland are a very welcoming bunch and I’ve yet to come across anyone even slightly salty.
When did you start play?
Feb 2016. A few of my friends and I had been playing Game of Thrones (the board game), Twilight Imperium, Zombicide and various eurogames fairly regularly. We’re all Star Wars daft and someone suggested giving this a bash. We bought a couple of cores and then got together one Sunday afternoon to give it a blast. I think we’d bought something like £250 worth of ships between us by the time we met up again the weekend after!
Why did you wanna go to Yavin Open series?
I think last year’s was the biggest the world has seen. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?! Also, the idea of a full weekend of only X-Wing away from everything is appealing to me.
What are your expectations?
I’m expecting to have fun. And to be asked to repeat myself a lot due to the accent! I’m not expecting to make the cut but I’d like to play as well as I can. Looking forward to seeing what the side events are.
Any thought on your list at yavin yet?
Not really. I’ve started dabbling with Scum (I was previously an Empire player) so maybe a two ship scum list including a party bus but we’ll see what Wave X brings.
What Meta do you think will be at Yavin?
Defenders. Lots of Defenders. I think bombs will be a thing too. It’ll be interesting to see what impact Rey and Wave X have on the meta. I really hope that the majority of people just bring what they enjoy flying and as a result we see a real variety of lists.
What are your thoughts on the new Tournament structure from FFG (if played Long)
I’ve not been playing too long but I’m a bit disappointed about the postponing of Store champs. I just missed all of 2016’s and they sound like a good way to get a lot of competitive X-Wing in without having to travel too far.
Any players you look up to?
As I said before, all of the local guys are great. I’d like to give a shout out to Bob Dee who sat with me for 45 minutes at last year’s Scottish regionals after he horsed me with his triple scouts and gave me loads of good advice which I’ve been trying to follow. The majority of it can be found in a blog he did for ‘Taking the Sith- How to get better at X-Wing’. I’d implore all new players to read it.
And good luck at Yavin.
Cheers Ole. Same to you and everyone else going. I’m looking forward to turning up and trying as hard as I can to kill your spaceships! Roll on February!
